The principle of non-attachment – and how it helps with taking action & getting results
“If you remember non-attachment and do not allow yourself to identify with your results as a way to define you, then you are free to act.” Debra Maldonado, Like A Spark from Fire.
It is all about intention.
The ideal state of mind is called sattva (sanskrit meaning purity, clarity or lightness). This is where you’re able to do what you want to do, but you’re not attached to the results. This allows you to create momentum from a higher place.
If you take action for external results you will always be attached. And your ego will drive your decisions. Remember - the ego is concerned with your survival. When you hit obstacles it will want you to pull back to be safe. That inner voice that drives you will often start saying things like:
You haven’t got what it takes
This was a terrible idea
Maybe this is not for you
No one will buy this
Who do you think you are? (my ego’s personal favourite)
The ego mind will make your results mean something about YOU. It is so easy to slip into a mindset where everything feels hopeless and you feel helpless - “what’s the point?’ type thinking. And then you want to give up.
However if you make the goal, set the intention, for internal results - such as growth & awareness - you will always get the results you want. Because even if there is an external failure, the internal is still winning - no matter what happens externally you are learning and growing. Your ego mind will quieten down because it won’t be as ‘threatened’ in the same way when events are occurring externally. And you will begin to take action from that higher place - that sattva state of mind.
It doesn’t mean you don’t desire external results - but you are not driven by them and attaching your worth to them.
Now, even if you find yourself wanting to give up, you don’t need to enter into a cycle of self-blame and self-criticism. Instead, observe the mind. Notice that you are feeling that way, and be compassionate towards yourself. Then, take small, easy steps. Keep moving forward. This helps when facing any kind of change, or trying to build something new. It could be that you want to create your own business, or start a creative project. When this state of mind kicks in, go gently. But keep going! It will create momentum and you will move out of this state of mind.
You can cultivate the clarity (sattva) mindset in 3 ways: meditation; visualization; & studying higher knowledge.
It takes practice! But the key throughout is non-attachment, focus on internal results, and see everything as an opportunity to grow.
The paradox is that when you let go of external material results, that is the moment when they come easily to you. The clarity gives you momentum without the angst. And then you can receive those results gladly :)
I would love to know: have you experienced that sattva feeling? That sense of clarity and ease? Being in the flow without attachment?
Have a great weekend! If you have any questions about this please just ask :)
